漸層鏡是高水準彩色攝影必備的濾鏡，漸層鏡既可以減低畫面局部的光亮度，控制局部反差，避免天空或閃光前景過曝等情況，還能使乏味的天空重現雲彩、湛藍，又可營造出特殊的時間氛圍，渲染主觀個性的天空顏色。
使用時應根據構圖的需要和地平線的高低，上下移動漸層鏡片來調節漸層線的高低位置（這是螺口濾鏡做不到的）；大光圈（或長焦距）會柔和淡化漸層線，因此應利用景深預測功能使光圈收縮到實拍光圈來調整漸層線的位置，避免出現在觀景器裏看到的感覺很好，照片出來以後才發現漸層線跑到下麵去了的現象。
鏡片的顏色是漸層的，濾光係數是分別測試淺色與深色兩部分。漸層鏡的最大作用在於平衡光差，因此，一般無需進行曝光補償，所提供的補償值可以看作是能壓反差的強弱度，或是鏡片顏色的深淺度。
使用前分別對天與地兩個部分測光，在得出光差比值後，選擇淺色或深色的濾鏡、以及單片或是多片濾鏡。
